Leafly: How ketamine is transforming mental health

It was a privilege working with Leafly on this article and getting to share my clinical experience treating mental health conditions with ketamine. Ketamine was the first psychedelic drug I closely studied as a psychiatrist and there’s a reason my work with this medication still continues today. It has an incredible ability to quickly and effectively relieve symptoms of depression and suicidality—in a way that out-performs traditional antidepressants, such as SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs.

If you’re interested in learning more about ketamine, I think you’ll enjoy this article. It’s offers a great overview of ketamine as an antidepressant—including some of the drug’s history, physiological and neurological effects, therapeutic benefits, and how it’s used in conjunction with psychotherapy. Feel free to read bits, pieces, or the entirety at the link below!

In a 2019 study, 12 out of 14 patients experienced a reduction in suicidal ideation following ketamine treatment, with some reporting results kicking in after just a few hours.
