New ketamine therapy protocol leverages the emotional healing power of family

Emotion focused ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, or EF-KAP is a theoretically informed treatment model created at Novamind and co-developed by Dr. Adele Lafrance and myself. EF-KAP supports the client in processing and integrating insights gained through the ketamine experience. Additionally, this model aims to increase overall self-efficacy with emotion processing thus enabling lasting symptom relief. Every aspect of the treatment is guided by two principles to help facilitate individual healing and growth:

  1. Supporting the emotional health of the patient
Developing skill of confidence with emotion processing
    Transforming emotion with emotion

  2. Leveraging the healing power of family
Providing education and skills to a support person
    Strengthening meaningful relationships
Creating a recovery-friendly environment outside of office
    Extending healing beyond the individual.

At Cedar Clinical Research in late 2020, Dr. Adele Lafrance and I successfully completed a clinical trial of EF-KAP for anorexia nervosa, a serious mental health condition with no current FDA-approved treatments. They also led a case series of EF-KAP for major depressive disorder.
